Hope your enjoying the new website update! We are in the process of loading our previous blog posts. Hang tight! We should have this done in the coming days. We will also have a new blog update to go with it.
If you have any questions, please contact the lodge!
Some of you may have heard that we had the privilege to not only photograph, but also host a pretty awesome wedding event in March. I realize it’s now the end of May, but I have only recently been able to finish up the editing of all the pictures and truly reflect on one of the biggest events Black River Lodge has seen in years! What a fun event, great family, and beautiful couple!
Joe, Lindsay and Lindsay's mom approached us nearly a year ago to start planning their big day. By the end of it the whole process, I almost felt like we had become family! We were with them every step of the way and together made sure their reception was exactly how they wanted it. The bride and groom were married in the Dominican Republic and opted to have a huge beach themed reception when they returned from their trip! Not going to lie, I wasn't sure at first how a theme like that was going to work for our Northwood’s themed lodge... but boy did they do a wonderful job pulling the "beach" out of this place!
The weekend started Friday night with a decorating “rehearsal” dinner party with family and friends staying at the lodge, since the bride and groom were already married the week prior. Over the course of a few hours, the dining room became a spectacle of peach, purple, teal and white tooling. It was lit up wall-to-wall with white strand lights! And, the little personal touches that Joe & Lindsay incorporated were so perfect for them and really added to the intimate feeling of the whole event. As their photographer, you can only imagine how difficult it was to capture every detail. Saturday morning finally arrived and I’d say we all agreed--the hard work paid off. Justin, our staff, and I were so excited for them and how everything turned out! The party kicked off with cocktail hour at 5pm and dinner followed at approximately 6:30. Food and dinner service was provided by locally-known Randi Jackson and was a delicious Carribbean style spread with chicken, pork and all the fixings! Cake was provided by an acquaintance of Joe & Lindsay and offered guests a mix of scrumptious cupcake flavors. The party continued downstairs in the BRL bar where friends and family danced the night away to music provided by a close friend of the bride & groom. Sunday morning breakfast rolled around and while most were still recovering from the night before, all we heard about was how wonderful the whole weekend turned out!
Congratulations Joe & Lindsay!
Joe & Lindsay,
We hope your wedding was everything you could possibly dream it to be! Thank you so much for allowing us to be apart of it all and giving us the chance to show what Black River Lodge can offer. You have an amazingly supportive family who we can clearly see loves you both to pieces. We wish you all the best in your new life together...wherever it may take you!

BRL will be reopening from our Spring hiatus next week Wednesday, May 20th, just in time for the official kickoff to Summer! There is a big ATV event taking place in the area (take a look at the link below!) and the spring weather has been nearly perfect for the outdoor enthusiasts to start their spring/summer adventures! If your looking for some where to stay & play over the holiday weekend, or this summer for that matter, shoot us a message! We'd love to have ya!
We will be back in the office more regularly starting Monday and we will respond to voice messages asap. Email and social media messages continue to be monitored daily.
30th Annual Memorial Weekend ATV/UTV Poker Run - Hurley, WI
Finished this project the other day and are really excited to share it with our guests this summer...and maybe even this winter! BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair), the new campfire area is conveniently located on the north side of the building, just off of the north lodge entrance and condo-suite entrances. We are just patiently waiting for the new grass to grow around it! We have a few new things planned this summer for this side of the building... will post pics as construction completes :)
First of all, welcome to our freshly updated website! We have a new email address for reservations & inquiries. And, today, I was able to transfer over the existing blog. The old Blogger blog will be removed shortly and we will be updating the website, this blog, Facebook, and Twitter with all of the latest and greatest going on with the Lodge.
So much has changed already in our short time living here at BRL... and we have many new things in the works! I realize I haven't been the best at keeping up with blogging, but hey, I'm sure you can only imagine the chaos and whirlwind of the last year. Winter (our busy season!) has come and gone and while we thought we went into it fully prepared... well... let's just say we learned a lot (in a good way)! To keep it simple, winter is just crazy around here. From Mid-December through Mid-March, we were either completely booked or nearly booked EVERY. SINGLE. WEEKEND. Between the day after Christmas through the New Year weekend, we were booked solid!!! Every single DAY. We compared with years past, and the lodge has not seen traffic like this in many years. Business was great! And we thank each and every one of you who supported us this season. We have yet to figure out if it was just the great weather (150" of snow in NOVEMBER!) or if it was our marketing, or just pure luck. Guess we will find that out next winter. Either way, it was a wonderful rookie year and we couldn't be more pleased with how it turned out.
The number one question that we received from guests this season was how we could possibly "do it all"... we live at a lodge, have 2 very small kids, a puppy, and have to cater to hundreds of different personalities daily. Well, I will say Justin & I worked many long hours.. some days it was a complete test of our mind, body, and soul, but most days it was quite rewarding and refreshing to watch our hard work flourish. We certainly couldn't have done any of it without our wonderful staffers - Tina & Sarah. When we were down, these two were able to lift us up and keep the place running smooth. Thanks girls for all of your hard work and dedication!
So here we are... Spring has sprung here at the lodge! We are extremely excited to see where this summer will take us. We've got several reservations on the books already and are super excited for the groups we are hosting this season. The weather is yet again in our favor (right now). Most of the snow melted at the end of March and temps have been at or above normal since Early March. Today for example, a humid 80+ degrees! Not bad for the U.P.! The tree buds have popped and we even have some green showing up already. Last year, it was June before we saw the leaves pop! Soon, we will be planting flowers and have already started a few projects outside. We will be trying a couple of new things outside this year... but more to come on that in future posts. For now, thank you all for catching up with us!

Today is the day that we say goodbye.
Three years is not a long time and most who own a house for this period of time have no problem just moving on to the next best thing. Some might find it odd that I’m writing this letter to our house, but what they don’t realize is that you are more than ‘just a house.’ You're our first home. You’re full of so many great memories that we won't be able to relive again through simply living in the house.
Justin carried me into the house on the night of our wedding.. lol, yes, even with "the dress"... where we basically slept for the next 2 days of our honeymoon because we were so exhausted from the whole whirlwind of our wedding.
Not long after, we brought home two beautiful boys from the hospital after two brutal pregnancies spent mostly in that ugly pink bathroom!
We laid to rest our beloved Maximus in a spot where we thought he would always watch over the kids as they played in the backyard. There are ‘scars’ all over the house from Max and his inability to handle thunderstorms!
Justin planted a couple of fruit trees the same year our first son was born which were to serve as a reminder to just how fast the little ones grow. The big maple in the back yard was our little piece of heaven and favorite place to set up the hammock to relax. Boy will I miss the beautiful Springs!
The blood, sweat, and tears of remodeling the basement... literally.
Our first Thanksgiving dinner as a family of four (Yes, Kanon was definitely there!) was prepared and devoured in that big red kitchen that we spent a whole weekend painting when we first purchased. And who could forget the story of the purchase!?
Cody’s first taste of dirt, Copper’s first winter, Kanon’s labor and the many sleepless nights and sleepy days to follow, Justin’s generator ‘mishap’, countless walks in the backwoods, love, fights, happiness, sadness, and so much more……………….
3353, you are and will be missed. You’ve been such a great place for us to start. I can only hope the next family calling you ‘home’ and restarting will have as many great memories as we did.
Your 2nd Family
Hello, Hello! It's been just over a month since we've officially taken over the 'ole Black River Lodge and I thought I'd throw out an update on the blog today! Sorry for such a delay between posts, but the honest truth is that I haven't quite decided how to use this blog yet! I'm sure most of you are keeping up with us via Facebook and have seen all the excitement over the last few weeks! (And, thanks for all the support by the way!!!!! If you haven't liked us yet, visit us at: www.facebook.com/blackriverlodge) As most of you know, Facebook probably not the best place to share too many details of the lodge and things going on. I'm still trying to figure it all out, but thinking this may be a good place to give you a "day in the life of a lodge owner" type of posts and of course updates on us and the kids.
So, I thought I'd start off with some Q & A for this one. The biggest question we've received so far from the locals and guests is "What in the heck made you come all the way up here and to do this?!" (... and honestly, people ask us exactly like that!!) The best response I can give is: Our Kids. We just wanted a different life for the boys then what we were currently living. Granted, the way we were living was not bad by any means... we were able to give our boys a safe place to grow and food in their little bellies. We just wanted something different.... more of a backwoods and relaxed community to raise them in versus the hussle and bussle that we've grown to accept as "normal."
You should all know that Cody is in absolute HEAVEN here. If you've never met him, he's your typical rough and tough little boy who LOVES the outdoors and anything on 4 wheels. He's totally fearless (which can be a good and bad thing!) and more independent then any other 2 year old that I know. He's learning his boundaries around the property and has been such a good little host to all the kids and their families that come and visit. I would say he's even had his first little "girlfriend" come and go. Our little Kanon is growing so fast and his best buddy is definitely his brother. I just love the looks and smiles Kanon gives Cody...... Cody just eats it up too ;) You can tell Kanon is just taking it all in. He is mesmerized by the river and waterfalls near us! It won't be long and he'll be crawling all over the lodge.
Just about every evening, I take the boys for a ride down by the river on the golf cart (about 3/4 of a mile) and it seems like their favorite time of the day. We've been able to take them to some of the most beautiful sites in the world.. places that kids are lucky to see before the age of 17.. and ours get to call it their "backyard." These were the kinds of things important to us for our boys and the biggest reason we decided to take a leap of faith into this adventure. The last month has definitely not been easy... in fact, we've had very long and exhausting days since arriving. It's the little things though, like taking our kids down by the river every night, that make this all worth it.
So now it's your turn! What other questions do you have for us? Maybe your contemplating a big move kind of like what we did and need some advice... Maybe your another lodge owner... Or maybe you just a friend with a general question... no matter what it is, we'd like to hear from you! Leave us a comment below with your question or feel free to email us if you would like to remain anonymous. I'll do my best to answer all questions in the comments or future blog posts :)
Thanks for catching up with us!

Black River Lodge is under NEW MANAGEMENT!
For those of you who do not know us, we wanted to take a few moments to introduce ourselves and the exciting changes taking place here at Black River Lodge. We are Justin and Brittany. We come to you from Lower Michigan, near the Grand Rapids/Holland area. We stumbled upon the Black River Lodge and fell in love with it from the first visit. We are outdoor enthusiasts and enjoy many of the activities the U.P. and Ironwood has to offer. We have two small boys, Cody (2) and Kanon (4 months), who also seem to have the same love for the outdoors! Come and visit us and you may also run into the 5th member of our family, our Great Dane pup, Copper.
What an exciting time for Black River Lodge! We’ve been busy beavers trying to finish up all of the legal paperwork and get settled in. We are finally DONE with the first part (let’s just say that nothing has gone to plan there!) and hopefully the next week or so will be for settling in! From the moment you arrive, we hope you’ll notice the progress that we’ve made to make Black River Lodge a better place for you to bring your family or group to visit! We love to read reviews and it seemed the #1 quick fix for the lodge was with the television service. Well I have great news for you! We will be offering SATELLITE TELEVISION in all of our rooms very soon! We have hired a company to help us and setup is scheduled to occur sometime in the next couple of weeks.
We have a lot of other facility plans in progress right now but an administrative item we are working on is putting together new summer and winter packages for groups. Hosting groups (weddings, family reunions, ski/snowmobile clubs etc.) is definitely our specialty! Though we still LOVE to host smaller families, groups and couples also! Have you seen our Honeymoon Suite!? Our website will be updated with all of of this and more as we go!
If there is ever anything that you need or think we can improve upon before, during, or after your stay, please do not hesitate to let us know! We also encourage online reviews if you’d rather contact us that way. We are here for you, our guests, and want to make your visit to the lodge and area enjoyable and memorable. We’d love to meet all of you – Give us a call today to book your next vacation!

Wow, what a crazy week! I'm hoping to be able to update you all soon on all the happenings! For now, we wanted to wish everyone a very happy and safe 4th of July!
When we decided to take on this opportunity, we knew it would be an all or nothing kind of thing. That is.. All of us.. Or none of us!
For those of you who have never had the pleasure, meet Copper!
Copper is our Great Dane pup, aka: lodge dog in training ;) He sure is a puppy with his energy level, but is starting to slow down a bit like most Great Danes do. Someday soon, you'll probably find this guy zonked out on the front deck when you arrive. He is probably the biggest (literally!) scardy cat.. so if you run into him at the door, make sure you give him a friendly hello and he may just become your new best friend :)
Hey there! Most, if not all, of these posts are written by Brittany with the help of Justin, family, and staff :) Enjoy and feel free to drop us a line! We LOVE receiving comments and messages on our posts.
